Sugarloaf Key Real Estate

Sugarloaf Key Real Estate

Towards the end of the Lower Florida Keys set between the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean rests Sugarloaf Key. From Mile Marker 16 to 20, the quaint stretch of land offers many luxuries to the everyday lifestyle. Relaxing under palm trees and dining near the oceanfront make Sugarloaf an exceptional alternative to the hustle and bustle of everyday activities.

Census information shows that Sugarloaf was first settled in 1850 by a hand full of farmers growing sweet potatoes and tropical fruit. In 1909 Charles and George Chase bought the land where the Sugarloaf Lodge sits and pioneered a sponge growing operation in Sugarloaf Sound. Soon the community of Chase sprung up with a post office, work buildings and houses. During the financial instability of World War I the sponge operation fell into bankruptcy. This same Sugarloaf property was later sold to Richter Perky in 1920 and the community subsequently named Perky was where he resumed efforts at growing sponges. He also wanted to build a retreat but was plagued by mosquitoes. With the advice of a Texas physician he constructed a 35 foot tall wooden tower that was designed to house insect eating bats. The bats couldn't be convinced to live there but the tower still stands as a land mark on Airport Rd. and is now listed on the register of historic places. At this time the Overseas Highway, State Road 4A ran a long the Atlantic side of Sugarloaf Key. Perky, wanting to join his land to the highway built Sugarloaf Boulevard at his expense to accomplish that.

Sugarloaf Key is full of family oriented neighborhoods and has both an elementary and middle school. It also has an airport that offers skydiving and a volunteer fire department. A marina is located next to the world famous Sugarloaf Lodge and Restaurant. An easy drive to Key West makes it an ideal location that is not the center of the rush, but close. This island is 20 miles north of Key West . Waterfront homes are available on both the oceanside and bayside in Sugarloaf.

Easy access to the water is essential to living in the Florida Keys, and Sugarloaf offers this necessity. The breathtaking land and seascape make Sugarloaf a great place to go fishing or watch a beautiful pink and orange sunset that only the Keys could offer. Sugarloaf offers unique back country areas where you can observe the Keys wildlife in their natural habitats.

Charter boats, kayaking and guided tours are all offered giving people many opportunities to take advantage of the Keys weather and see the natural beauty that the Keys have to offer. Fly fishing, back country and flats are all obtainable not far from land.

The Florida Keys and Key West are said to be famous for being laid back, beautiful and enjoyable. Sugarloaf is a treasure off the beaten path that promises an oasis in amadrushed world.
